AutoCAD’s design environment is rich and powerful. It provides several features of value for professional users, including the ability to view and modify both 2D and 3D drawing views at the same time. Each view can be in a single drawing, a group of drawings, or imported from another drawing. Most of the functionality available in AutoCAD is accessed from within a drawing, with tools that may be used to change object attributes and create custom shapes, text, and line style. Some aspects of the software are not confined to a single drawing. They can be used to manipulate a group of drawings or a data set.

The main functions of AutoCAD are:

Create, modify, plot, and view 2D and 3D drawings.

Draw and modify 2D and 3D objects.

Plot 2D and 3D geometric coordinates, vectors, and other points.

Create and edit blocks and use them in drawings.

Work with reference points and models.

Evaluate and calculate with the design data and create properties, dimension, and other attributes.

Use special toolbars to define text, line styles, and blocks, and manage common drawing functions.

Evaluate graphic primitives.

Manage drawing settings.

Assign annotations to drawing objects.

Define, view, and update Xref data.

Support GIS.

Export and import data.

Work with DWG, DXF, and other file types.

Support engineering.

Work with databases, including AutoCAD Spatial Query.

Create, edit, and view architectural and engineering-related data.

Work with drawings created by other vendors.

Create and edit Adobe Illustrator files.

Evaluate and manage file metadata.

Display a cross-reference table.

Review plotter-related settings.

Display or print technical tables.

Support cutting tools.

Create and edit Word and Excel files.

View a table of contents or a drawing

User interface, such as page layout managers, and the graphical properties system, can also be altered and extended to produce a custom user interface. Custom drawings may be produced through use of plugins.

The Basic Language (AutoCAD’s native programming language) is a powerful programming language. However, its widespread use is limited by a lack of documentation and up-to-date information. The Basic Language is the primary programming language for AutoCAD LT and AutoCAD Map 3D.

The first version of AutoCAD was released in 1989 by the PTC Corporation. The software was originally designed by Manny Goldberg, co-founder of PTC, and was produced under a contract to NURB. The first version was referred to as “Autocad 8 for DOS”. The first release on DOS was in 1989, released on November 8, 1989, and priced at US$900. A follow-up version, Autocad 88 was released a year later. This version, which was still based on DOS, was an upgrade and had an additional three functional modes: design, drafting and review. In 1990, AutoCAD 90, a version which could be used with any operating system, was released. It had 32 bit and 64 bit versions. In 1994, AutoCAD 95 was released with a “programmer’s edition” as the first major revision since Autocad 8. AutoCAD 95’s first preview release was shipped in 1992, while the final release was shipped in 1994.

In January 1993, the rights to AutoCAD and related products were acquired by Autodesk when PTC and its parent company, Digital Equipment Corporation, were acquired by the multinational corporation. The move prompted accusations of hypocrisy from the NURB and complaints from many NURB members that PTC had violated its contract with NURB by selling software based on NURB technology to Autodesk. The first version to feature true 64 bit technology was the 1993 release, AutoCAD 93.

In 1995, when Autodesk changed their corporate name to Autodesk, the product became known as AutoCAD, while other products were given product numbers: AutoCAD 2D: AutoCAD 2D, AutoCAD 95: AutoCAD 95, etc. An early public release of AutoCAD 95 was shipped in 1994, two years before its final release date of 1996. A version of AutoCAD was available for the Macintosh starting in 1993 with Auto

If you save the model in a view other than default, click on View ribbon>Save View as.

Create a new drawing
Open the project

Select the drawing tab and in the Model tree select the model

Click OK on the program’s general configuration box.

Save the project with your new drawing name.

Open your new project and draw geometry.

Save the new file in your project.

Uncheck the file to be imported when a newer version of the file is loaded

Load the new file.

Now you have the ability to edit the drawing without making changes to the model file.

Create one feature per instance
The model file contains all the objects in the file, but may have multiple instances of an object. You can only edit one instance of an object at a time.

To create a new feature, select the instance of the object you wish to edit.
Double-click on the feature (Ctrl+click on the drawing or model window), or right-click and choose Create New Feature.

Right-click again on the new feature and choose Rename, to rename the feature.

Select the parent, the name and the dimensions of the feature.

Export and Import
Export the project to a new drawing
Use the model browser to select a folder location.

Select a location and browse to it.

Locate the model file you want to export, select it and click on File>Export.

Select a file format, including a choice for the default file format for the file type.

Select a filename for the new file.

Click on the Options box and choose the data type to include in the export.

Select the checking box “Export view information”, and click on “Save”.

Select the checkbox “Create Revit link file”, and click on “Save”.

Note: If you choose not to create a link file, and the model you want to export is saved with the.dwg extension, then you can use the Create Link File option to import the file into your project.

When you have selected a file format, click on “Save”.

If your choice is not listed, the file format you selected must be available.

If the file format is a native Revit format, click on the

Smart Guide:

AutoCAD 2023 includes new features and enhancements to the Smart Guide system.

Quick-keys: Add advanced customizations to your guides.

Handle Refinement: Automatically match your handles’ lengths and edges to design patterns for better accuracy.

Axis Dimensioning:

Axis Dimensioning features in AutoCAD 2023 are designed to enhance your experience with the dimensional aspects of your drawings. With Axis Dimensioning, you can easily view and maintain the size of your drawing objects on a 2D plan view (e.g., a 2D perspective or orthographic view) with a floating 2D reference or compare your dimensions to a base dimension.

2D reference:

Compare and track the size of your drawing objects on a 2D plan view. (video: 8:16 min.)

Base dimension:

Keep a dimension or reference with the base drawing to ensure you have a consistent and accurate base dimension. (video: 6:52 min.)

Dimension output:

You can choose between a continuous or semi-continuous output format to help streamline your workflows.

Columns feature provides contextual information about the 3D objects in your drawing, including links to associated.dwg files, useful information such as the object’s instance name and whether it’s linked to a table, and the number of 3D and 2D views of the object.

In addition to its functionality, columns are visually attractive, allowing users to quickly identify the objects they want to view and quickly see the associated attributes.

Columns feature:

Links to.dwg files: AutoCAD’s columnar schema enables you to link objects to other drawings and files. The links can be stored with the object for later reference, as well as for sharing with others and for searching.

Table: AutoCAD’s columnar schema is an optional feature that enables you to insert a table into your drawing. In this table, you can refer to a
