In the automotive industry, there is a movement toward all electric vehicles due to concerns over the growing levels of carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere and the negative impact that these emissions are having on the climate. In such an all electric vehicle, a regenerative braking system is used to recover energy when the driver brakes, and in response, stores the energy in a battery. In many applications, magnetoresistive sensors are used to monitor the energy stored in the battery and gauge whether the battery is getting low and should be recharged. This is the case, for example, in vehicle applications in which the amount of energy stored in the battery may be used to power an electric motor that propels the vehicle, or in applications in which the amount of energy stored in the battery may be used to charge other devices such as portable electronic devices.
In these applications, the magnetoresistive sensor is placed at the back of the battery, which is usually located in the engine compartment. The magnetoresistive sensor measures the magnetic field that is generated by the battery and develops an output that indicates the energy stored in the battery. In this way, the driver knows whether the battery has enough energy to power the vehicle for the distance that is anticipated and whether the driver will need to recharge the battery before driving off.
In order to minimize power loss when a magnetoresistive sensor is measuring an alternating magnetic field, it is usually necessary to orient the sensor so that it is pointed toward the magnetic field of interest. By so doing, the magnetic flux lines of the magnetic field are mostly shunted through the sensor’s sensing layer which has a magnetoresistive effect. This is most commonly done in applications where the magnetic field is a magnetic bias field that is established by the magnetic circuit of a magnet.
In applications in which a magnetoresistive sensor is designed to measure the magnetic field generated by a relatively small source of a magnetic field such as a battery, the sensor typically has a sensing layer that is placed in the path of the magnetic field to be sensed.
