iOS: Secure password for iPhone

I have been using a common password to unlock my iPhone after a complete iOS backup. I am using it in combination with a 4 digit pin code, so I can be sure that I will unlock it even if somebody “borrows” my iPhone.
My question is, if somebody obtains my common password, is it possible for that individual to unlock my iPhone? And can the same be said for a 4 digit pin code?

A:

If somebody obtains your common password, they can use that common password to unlock the phone and get full access to all of your data. (With the PIN, however, they’d have to guess the PIN in order to unlock.) I have known people to have their mother’s first and last name, and other common things, so their data would remain private even if they were stolen or lost.
If you, however, change the PIN and use a new, random one, then even if somebody has your common password, they can’t get access to your data without knowing the PIN.
To combat brute force attacks, you can also disable the autofill feature. It’s off by default, but you can go to Settings > iCloud > Password and turn on “Add AutoFill Suggestions”.
